Authentic Punjabi cuisine in London

The "Tayyabs" in London is a legendary restaurant that has been bringing the flavors of traditional Punjabi cuisine from Pakistan to the British capital since 1972. Founded by Mohammed Tayyab as a small café in a vibrant neighborhood, it is now run by his three sons - Saleem, Aleem, and Wasim - who continue the family's passion for authentic, high-quality food. What started as a hidden gem for locals has evolved over the decades into an institution that is known far beyond the city limits. Tayyabs is known for its straightforward enjoyment, generous portions, and an atmosphere that is as lively as it is relaxed - a place that has become a must-visit for both Londoners and tourists.

Best Indian restaurants in London

Tayyabs' cuisine is characterized by its intense spices and the use of fresh, authentic ingredients that perfectly capture the taste of Punjab. Particularly famous are the "Lamb Chops", marinated for hours in a spicy Kadai Masala marinade and then grilled in the Tandoor - the result is a smoky, tender meat that is enhanced with coriander, onions, and chili, and is often considered an essential part of a visit. Also noteworthy is the "Karahi Chicken", a slow-cooked dish with juicy chicken swimming in a rich sauce of ginger, garlic, and a secret blend of spices, offering a perfect balance of heat and depth. Vegetarians will enjoy the "Tarka Daal" - soft lentils in a buttery, smoky sauce infused with turmeric and chili, which is so flavorful that it even convinces meat lovers. The freshly baked Naan breads, especially the garlic and butter variant, are an ideal accompaniment to soak up the flavors.

A unique feature of the restaurant is its BYOB philosophy - guests are allowed to bring their own alcohol without any corkage fee, contributing to a relaxed and cost-effective experience. Many opt for a cold beer from the nearby store, while others prefer the traditional "Mango Lassis", which are sweet, creamy, and refreshing, perfect to complement the spicy dishes. This policy reflects the unpretentious nature of the establishment, focusing on the essentials: excellent food in large portions.

BYOB restaurants in London

The ambiance is lively and sometimes chaotic, adding to the charm of Tayyabs. The space spans multiple levels, filled with closely spaced tables and a functional rather than luxurious decor. The walls are adorned with colorful patterns and subtle lighting, giving a touch of Indian glamour, but the focus is clearly on the food and the community. It is not a place for a quiet, romantic dinner - instead, there is a cheerful buzz, accompanied by reggae music and the clatter of plates. The open kitchen allows guests to watch the skilled chefs work with impressive precision, as the aroma of Tandoor-grilled meat fills the air.

Vibrant atmosphere Indian restaurants

The service is quick and efficient, albeit sometimes a bit brusque - a reflection of the high demand and constant flow of guests. Reservations are now possible, a welcome change as in the past, one had to expect long queues that often stretched out onto the street. Nonetheless, Tayyabs remains a place that values spontaneity and flexibility, with the staff ensuring that the food is served fresh and hot despite the hustle and bustle. Weekends or evenings can get busy, but most guests take this as part of the experience.

The food was so bad, we were totally ripped off with those ridiculous prices. We ordered tikka masala and it was literally DRENCHED IN OIL! Are we eating oil or are we eating curry sauce? It was disgusting and tasted so bad. None of the food was tasty or flavoursome at all, it was just spicy as hell. Even the paneer tikka tasted so bland, unfresh, cheap and gross. They had the audacity to charge us a £6+ service charge (which we of course didn’t pay) even after we complained about the oil. Instead of apologising they want to scam us even further for a ‘service’ charge as if they deserve it Extremely disappointing experience, will never come back here again.

Food came early however the starter seekh kebab was dry. Dry karahi was good and karahi chicken was average. Saag paneer was disappointing. Naan were pretty good and karak tea was basic as well. Too many loud white people in dining in. Overall ill give 5/10

Great food and service. We went on a weekday afternoon lunch time and no crowd... Hardly 15-20 people ! Great food at reasonable price. Sure will come again! Authentic aroma... Decent place (Not a posh place)with fresh , aromatic flavour food. You pay for food rather than the place....

The problem with Indian food is every place have thales own twist. Bring your own beer which is great saves money. The food is good but like I said, different. I prefer my local.

Real food. No airs and graces.fantastic starters, great curries. Desserts to die for. And byo.. best value night out for a group of friends...We have an unofficial Monday curry club every couple of months to coincide with delicious lamb shanks, though the Wednesday shami kebabs take me back to 1980 when a Pakistani colleague took me for my first ever curry...Been an addict ever since. Tayyabs feeds my habit.

Everything was great except the mains… poppadoms and dips delicious. Had the chicken kahari, chicken tikka masala and the paneer saag. All pretty flavourless unfortunately. Masala wasn’t sweet or nutty at all, just tasted like a standard curry. Peshwari naan was really good. We went on a Monday and it was absolutely rammed and so loud with huge groups (it’s BYO too). Wouldn’t go back as a two but maybe as a huge group it’s a safe bet?

Loved the lamb chops for many years but today they were quite tough and the marinade was different..spicier. My mouth was burning. I’m so sad. Service was quite slow and we had to try and get the waiters’ attention for everything. I don’t think they care about their customers much.

It is a huge place and yet they make you feel great. The food was really good and the service was quick and accommodating. Their portions are good, but not impressive

Atrocious, call yourself a Muslim resturant owned by a Muslim man and then you continue to blast music out loud in the restruant when many Muslims come to eat after taraweeh prayers despite them asking you numerous times to turn the music down slightly as you are blasting it as if we are a night club we cannot even hear ourselves talk. We are usually a regular at this resturant but will no longer be coming and advising all our Muslim brothers and sisters of the same! Have some decency and respect in Ramadan especially as you yourself are muslim.

Really good food. Everything we had (4 person) was spot on. The atmosphere was brilliant. The whole place was packed with happy people. Service was ultra fast and friendly. I loved it. It's busy and just right. Queues down the stairs and outside.

Tayyabs is a throw back to a less gentrified London. It offers delicious food at a reasonable price and is 10 minutes from the financial district (whitechapel tube is 2 stops from monument)A good sign is that you see lots of local people and other Londoners eating there. Even if you or your partner are not into Asian cuisine the lamb chops are universally excellent and highly recommended so dont hesitate even if one or two of your group aren't asian food fans. This is a solid option with a nice atmosphere that doesn't cost an arm or a leg ( my spend was around 23 pounds)
